THE DESIGNER IN THE BOOT

Hi, I'm Mark Crosby, the designer behind Bootleg Sporting Design.

I'm a designer based in Madison, Wisconsin, creating logos, uniforms, typography, and visual systems for clubs, leagues, brands, and organizations. My work is rooted in a simple belief: the best sports identities aren't invented, they're uncovered.

Like many designers, I started with crayons and stacks of paper before graduating to MS Paint on a family computer. Unlike my elementary peers, I wasn't drawing superheroes or spaceships. I was drawing team logos, redesigning uniforms, and imagining alternate histories for my favorite clubs. Long before I knew what branding was, I was obsessed with the way colors, logos, and uniforms could tell a story. What began as a childhood hobby eventually became a career.

Outside the studio, I'm a father, birder, history major, and lifelong lover of sport. Those interests shape every project I take on. Whether I'm researching local folklore, studying historic club badges, digging through municipal archives, or identifying birds on a trail, I'm always looking for the stories that make a place unique. Those stories often become the foundation of the identities I create.

Today, I work with clubs and organizations across the sporting landscape, with a particular passion for soccer and the culture that surrounds it. Every project begins with research, conversation, and curiosity before a single line is drawn.

WHY BOOTLEG?

It's a fair question.

In popular culture, a bootleg is often thought of as a copy. Bootleg Sporting Design stands for the opposite.

To me, "bootleg" represents independence, creativity, and doing things your own way. It's a nod to football boots, supporter culture, DIY creativity, and the people who build something meaningful outside the mainstream.

That's why the studio's philosophy is simple:

All Original.

No templates. No recycled ideas. No shortcuts.

Every club, community, and organization has its own history, culture, and identity. My job is to uncover those stories and turn them into something people are proud to wear.

Because the best ideas already exist.

We just have to find them.
